May your Holiday Gifts be Facebook Branded

Man- its been awhile… and rightfully so… I promise… lots going on in Ryan Hand land, but that will be a story for another time. Right now- its time to talk about FACEBOOK! Do you think if I use the word “Facebook” enough in this facebook post that I will go up in SEO becasue of facebook the searchable word? I’m facebook not facebook sure facebook either…

So I get back to work and on my desk is a pretty little box (for the record- not pretty- Brown normal box). I open it up and its another box. This one is actually pretty, white with some social facebook branding

My first thought is that I am so freaking awesome that Facebook has sent a personalized job offer to my current employer! Wow- I must be THE SHIT! Then reality hits me… Facebook doesn’t want me, they want my business… ok fine. Let me just open this box before I make any more assumptions…

Ah HA! Please Share the Good Cheer. $50 to the Educational Cause of my choice! Ok- Facebook, I like.

For real, this was a really awesome way to give a really wonderful meaningful gift to your customers. Its not a box of really bad candy or stale trail mix (if you are going to send me these things please still send, I do eat them… usually in one sitting) it was a gift that gets to make a difference.

 

They also included a really nice reusable water bottle with a filter. A

 really nice gift for a conscious austinite.

Lets take a second and talk presentation: They really stopped at nothing to make this look amazing. From the outter box being very “apple clean” to the easy message of the cards.  They use of less than 15 words to make a HUGE statement. This is marketing. This is branding. This is the way that thoughtful gifts should be done.

I know their resources are high, but if you are trying to win the affection of someone this is a great way to do it.

Instagram, an instant hit

Just downloaded Instagram and like many others I took right too it. At first I thought it was just some other app to take pictures. “No Thank you” I said “I have camera +” (amazing photo product for iphone) but I came to realize its much more. It takes the technology of the facebook or twitter feed and goes photo… thus every update has a photo. Think this is overkill? Well its not- they provide filters for their pictures with makes everyone look like a photog. This brings me too my deep emo quote “Everything looks better through a filter” (don’t worry, I’m not slitting my writs or swallowing a bottle of pills- its just an emo line that came out.) for real though… these pictures make a brick wall look interesting. I like to scroll through the feed and say to myslef “oh, look at the attitude of that brick wall they captured, what a statement, we all have walls we must pass to get to out next step”  then i realize I am looking at a brick wall and its not that deep…

If you are in need of another social network this one is fun and great. If you are already overwhelmed by facebook and twitter then don’t even try…

I <3 LinkedIn & 5 tips for success

Its time for me to express my love… My Love for LINKEDIN. No- its not because I get to stalk back (stalking back is going to the persons profile who has viewed your profile- often this leads to a never ending stalk -a-thon [a stalk-a-thon is when two people are stalking each others profiles because they keep showing up as viewing each other on linkedin which often leads to LI-loss-of-job {LI-Loss-of-job is when you lose your job beacuse you are always on LinkedIn looking at people who looked at your profile during your stalk-a-thon}])

Linkedin has been a MORE than valuable reasource for business and personal relationship building. I have been able to leverage this service to meet contacts at Facebook, Google, Gowalla, Hypem, SunPower, Bazaarvoice, HomeAway and so many other great companies. Its great to see that a 2nd or 3rd connection is really SO CLOSE.

A few tips:

1. Complete yer dern profile! This means take you resume and copy it over to the linkedin profile. This will serve you so much better in years to come. Your resume will be out on the internet for anyone to find… AND you will never have to worry about “editing/updating” your resume because you will only be adding to it in the future.

2. Add a good summary. Make this something that you are passionate about and that you would want people to read about you. If its business talk about it- if its photography talk about it- if its charity talk about it.

3. Specialties are so easy to add and take only a few minutes… why have you not done this?

4. Ask for recommendations. Just like in sales you need to ask for it to get it. Don’t expect people to be browsing Linkedin and think “well of course I should recommend Ryan!” it doesn’t happen. You need to ask.

5. Update your status. Probably the most overlooked item on linkedin- it is a fact that when you update your status once a week you are 10x more likely to show up on relevant search results. We all forget to do this- but make a point not to forget… its for your own good.

There are many more things I could mention but 5 is a good number 🙂

Social Media Pros of Austin TX

If you’re like me and you love networking then you understand that contacts can get all mixed up and tangled in the mind grapes. I need a way to keep these contact aligned and fresh, thus I am going to start a new blog series that outlines what each Social Media Pro I meet does and loves. Will it be full of shameless plugs? Maybe. Will it be just like other blogs? I hope not. Will it be the best thing Austin has ever seen? Well… I’ll let you decide 😉

Social Media Moron

I rarely listen to the radio, but this morning I was forced to in my loaner car…
BEST DECISION EVER! I heard about the story of a man who was in a stand off with police holding a hostage, and posting EVERYTHING on Facebook…
I mean… wow! But the best part wasn’t the post, or the picture of he and the hostage, it was someone chiming in saying “There is a sniper over in the bushes so lay low” and the response “Thanks bro”…

#UnGeeked an Elite Experience

Do you attend conferences? Social Media conferences? Ok- then you know that some of them just SUCK! With so many of them out there, it’s hard to find ones that have golden takeaways and really tickle your mind grapes. (Mind Grapes is totally not a real word/thing, but I heard it on 30 Rock once and it stuck) @that woman_is is onto something. She is the creator and mastermind behind #UnGeeked Elite – a Retreat for those tired of bland run of the mill Social Media lecture sessions. I attended #Ungeeked in Chicago a few weeks ago and am still processing all the incredible knowledge I was able to soak up.

Why is it so much better? It’s a 3 day retreat with 8 discussions a day lead by some of the brightest minds in the industry. #Ungeeked takes away “death by PowerPoint” by not using slides- rather starting a topic and allowing us attendees to discuss theories and ideas as they relate to each of us- our industries- and our experiences.

I’m so glad @sexythinker was one of the first to lead- she shot motivation through my veins with her stories of the 30 day personal revolution.  “Be the change” she exemplifies the change- and reminded me that we need not always use social platforms to talk about ourselves- but promote and cause a “social ripple” for a greater good like #nokidhungry.

Olivier Blanchard aka @thebrandbuilder totally cleared out the fog in front of the mystical Social Media ROI. Friends and likes and followers will never equate apples to apples into a dollar amount, so his discussion gave me new hope to re-align my deliverables and show how I can prove a ROI at my job… I would explain more- but you need to talk to him- or better yet read his book Social Media ROI.

I just found myself almost saying my companies name in that last paragraph… then I thought “well… do I want to do that? Are there legal ramifications?”  Luckily we were able to talk about the law and social media with @DianaMLaw. Her discussion recharged me with that “go get um” “Innocent until proven guilty” spirit. After all, the precedents are just now being discovered and we will be the ones to help mold how laws in this area are going to be structured. I’m still going to speak freely and update all my networks. Better go update my Linked-in before @jwillie will use me as an example of what NOT to do! 😉

I could write so much more about all the other speakers, but this is a blog not a book. Every single discussion leader was divine, and I feel honored to have been in the same room with all of them. Now I gotta run and grab some coffee with @spikejones and bask in the glory of Austin… hey #UnGeeked… when are you coming here?
